Why? Because it feels good and it does good
A large part of what’s gone wrong with our poor planet is we’ve cut down so many trees. We need them back!
They do so much for us - not just sequestering carbon which of course is the pressing urgency. They also are a safe-haven for wildlife, encourage rainfall, affect weather systems, prevent soil erosion, reduce air pollution, restore degraded land, keep the soil fertile, and provide livelihoods for local people.
Replenishing the world’s forests is one of the most powerful and life creating solutions to runaway climate change. Part of an exquisite, complex nature system, trees can help rebuild our world. They’re beautiful and they belong here.
Ok got it. So how do I take action?
The easiest and highest impact way is to contribute to a planting project. The best ones are designed not only to restore trees but to do it in a way that is ecologically, economically and socially sound, helping local people create a revitalised way of living.
There are so many amazing planting initiatives you can contribute to…here are 3 international ones we’ve chosen to make it easy. You can also look for your own local groups if you want to join in with the actual planting!
One Tree Planted - North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa
Plant A Billion - 72 countries around the world
Tree Sisters - unusual in that they also work with behaviour change and a consciousness shift
If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, you could choose a native tree that’s right for your soil, aspect and wildlife, and plant your very own. You’ll be supporting your own garden’s ecosystem - a mini planet rejuvenation of a most rewarding kind.
Share how you get on, and any suggestions, on our social channels or in the box below!
But will it cost me more money?
Surprisingly little! It’s mostly a ‘choose your own amount’ set up. So anywhere from £1 or $1 upwards, often with a threshold of about £5. You can also fund monthly for longevity.
We…
Aimee: I chose to gift to TreeSisters and my £10 donation will plant 33 trees. My new title (according to them) is Tree Restorer. Yes!
Sonia: I got a tree planted complimentary with my subscription of Ethical Consumer (which Aimee bought me). It was the best feeling in the world.
