Why? Because none of us want planet-unfriendly Easter eggs with loads of plastic packaging!
But we do want Easter eggs, so we’ve been doing some scouting!
There’s 80 million Easter eggs sold every year in the UK, most of them in those huge boxes with plastic shells. Gah! What's great, is that the supermarkets and manufacturers are starting to seriously commit to sorting it out. Waitrose announced it’s halving the plastic on its own brand eggs, Aldi is removing all plastic from it’s entire Easter egg range by the end of the year and the Co-op is going for it across the board.
Great stuff!
Here’s our picks of the 6 environmental, ethical, all-round best. We were looking for plastic free with packaging that’s easily recyclable, chocolate that’s responsibly, sustainably sourced and ideally organic (because this has such a big impact on biodiversity, soil health, food systems and so much more). Vegan an excellent bonus. And we wanted ethical companies who are fundamentally good eggs themselves. If you’re doing a last minute supermarket dash, tick as many of these boxes as you possibly can.
As an aside, chocolate is a hot environmental topic and we’ll be digging much deeper into that one, to come!
Most of these come in different flavours so if it’s not spot on for your taste buds browse the brand
